Eat an Elephant (or 2020) One Bite at a Time

In Judaism, it is the start of a new year. And fall always feels like a new start, after the oppressive heat of summer has passed. But here we remain locked away and cautious with days that don’t seem much different than the next. The newness of stay-at-home has worn off, and we don’t know when we can run around carefree again. What do we have to look forward to?

I can’t say I have an answer. We have one quarter left of 2020, and it looks nothing like we thought it would – no ACL, no football games, all the local fall festivals cancelled. So many of us are having to juggle at-home parenting with at-home working it’s a wonder we make it through the days.

So maybe that is the focus–one day at a time. Finding a way to make this day a good day. Waking up to catch the sunrise, taking off for an hour at lunch to sit on the patio and read a book, making time to schedule a zoom happy hour with your family, sending handwritten notes of well wishes to people who probably don’t even know you are thinking of them, reflecting on what you did accomplish at the end of the day.

At Lazar Law, we held a successful virtual firm retreat this month; we spent the whole day working on our team dynamics . Now, we are reviewing the goals we set for 2020 and focusing on those projects that need attention so that we can end the year with having met our goals, despite the pandemic. We only have 90 days left – and that is something to look forward to.

So for October, I challenge you to look at what you need to do to make your days better and to end your year well. We should all be proud of how we not only persevered but how we thrived. I know we can do it.

Be Bold,

Jodi @LazarLaw

FEATURING AUSTIN

TINY PIES

It takes until the end of September to feel Fall in Austin, and with Fall comes Pie Season. I can think of nothing better to help cheer us up than pie. National Dessert Day is October 14 and National Pumpkin Day is October 26. Mark your calendars; it is time for pie.

Austin is lucky to have locally-owned Tiny Pies, where you can get handheld muffin-sized single serving sweet and savory pies made by hand from scratch in small batches daily with the season’s highest quality local natural ingredients.

You can get a Tiny Pie once, but the real fun is keeping up with all the flavor options, as the menu changes regularly.

Fan Favorites include Dutchy’s Apple, Sweet Texas Pecan, Texas Two Step and Tart Cherry. Tiny Pies’ signature Texas Two Step pie is a mix of pecan pie and chocolate brownie, with a chewy rich chocolate brownie on top and a gooey pecan filling on bottom.

There is always a Vegan option, and now Tiny Pies offers a Gluten-Free crust. Oh, and there is a whole cream pie case.

September featured Pear Cranberry, with fresh bosc pears, tart cranberries, fresh ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and topped with a brown sugar crumb and Turtle Pecan, with chocolate, pecans, and pecan pie filling topped with drizzled chocolate, bourbon caramel and sea salt. The Vegan option was Apple Bourbon Caramel made with granny smith apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove with a crumb topping under apple bourbon caramel sauce.

What will October bring? Tiny Pies is sure to have specialty pies for Halloween and Texas-shaped hand pies for homewatching the Longhorn football games. Will they bring back their Vegan Pumpkin Coconut Chiffon or their Pumpkin Chai pies?

You must follow @tinypies on Instagram to get their weekly specials and special announcements. How else would you know they are offering S’mores Pie for a weekend only or Peanut Butter and Jelly Pie during Back to-School week? This is important news you cannot afford to miss.

Also consider the savory pot pies. Grab from your freezer and pop in the oven when you’re ready in flavors like: Beef Pot Pie, Chicken Pot Pie, Veggie Pot Pie, King Ranch and Green Chili Mac & Cheese.

Tiny Pies also delivers and make excellent gifts. You can curate your dream box and even send a personalized message box of Tiny Pies to send love. I mean, National Boss’s Day is October 16.

Tiny Pies has 3 locations for curbside pickup in Austin: South Lamar, Burnet and Westlake. Nationwide shipping is available through Goldbelly, so even if you aren’t in Austin, you need not miss out.
